Acrylic Flowers in Water

Forgive me if I have posted this before, I'm not quite sure this one exactly, but I rather like this so here it is again! Acrylic on canvas with much sloshing of water on top, layer by layer. Original measured around 28" x 22" can't quite remember exactly! I painted this series of flowers about four years ago.

Part of my figures in landscape theme for which I am best known, this series, entitled 'Society in the Square in yellow' was a favourite and one of four bought by a client. Ah, those were the days...only four years ago...where HAS the market gone?

Work in Progress - 10 years

Thought you might like to see a work in progress for a change. It's running along in the background whilst I'm also doing watercolour sketches. This one is in watercolour too, as you see, and is Bepton Road, Midhurst, W. Sussex. Very close to where I used to live. Yep I started it around ten years ago, picked it up recently and am carrying it on. When finished, it'll be the most ludicrous time I've taken to complete a painting.

Tewkesbury Sketched

Okay so i've started painting again after a long break! This one is a watercolour of Tewkesbury, one year after the floods, the town filled with people celebrating the fact that most of the buildings are now refurbished and that Tewkesbury is up and running as an interesting and historic place to visit.

Art in Miniature by Lynn

I found a photo of the miniatures i used to paint. I'd love to do some more actually - when i get the time. This is a truly awful photo of course but it might give you some idea. They are painted on ivory paper with tiny brushes, some consisting of only a few hairs. Acrylic paint is used. The larger one on the left is of Samuel Pepys. It measures roughly 3" x 2". The top one of artist John Constable, and measures around 2" x 1 1/4" the third was an attempt at a Da Vinci if i remember correctly. Hope you enjoy them.

Bert's Birthday

Peter very kindly asked for a new post and something recent. I haven't painted for ages really Peter, apart from private commissions. Instead, as it's my birthday today i thought i'd post this. Entitled 'Bert's Birthday', it's one of eight illustrations for a children's book i wrote. It's about Bert, pictured here, who wonders what it's like to see from all the way up there in the house. His friend Tom, another mouse, arranges a surprise so they can secretly climb into the farmer's pocket, which is very scary indeed lest he should find them. They travel upstairs in this way and finally see the view from the top of the house. I can't lay my hands on the other illustrations right now, but will find them soon and post them here.

Dark Blue Flower

Having been kindly pressed by some to upload some more work, i oblige with this, an acrylic on board. I painted it in 2005 and have done very little new pieces since then. As soon as i do, i will post them here. I like the simplicity of this series, the way the flowers grow out of the edges. I hope you do too.

My son, depicted here, aged 7, in a watercolour sketch is all grown up now and is twenty today! Needless to say, i am very, very proud of him. He's very busy, leading an independent life at University studying Computing.

This is one of my figures in landscape designs. They represent different areas of society, travelling through life which is symbolised in the horizontal brushstrokes rushing past in the background. I like the child in the front waving a flag. It is now one of my favourite paintings, though i was close to throwing it away when i completed it. Someone stopped me from doing so and I'm grateful for that. Thank you. He knows who he is.

It's no masterpiece; a simple ten minute sketch but it has Eric written all over it. Love your blog Eric!

This is a watercolour sketch of the ruin of Cowdray Castle, in Midhurst W. Sussex, UK. It is particularly personal to me as i used to live just around the corner from this beautiful building and would walk often in the grounds. I probably enjoy doing these watercolour sketches the most. Great fun and fairly quick to execute, on paper. Commissions welcomed! £45 each, measuring 7" x 5".

This painting took a lot of paint. In gold acrylic, it took several layers before i was happy with the effect. It's quite difficult to see here but in the centre are some figures, silhouetted as usual, and at the left foreground there is an indented character simply standing watching. Left out. Alone.

Not the greatest of photos I'm afraid but it does illustrate the sort of paintings my work is most known for. Silhouetted figures on a journey through life. Horizontal lines in background signify the passage of time behind us all whilst carrying out the day to day job of living. You can see the two red figures on the left at a stationary time in life, observing, watching, waiting. Gold figures to the right are active, in motion, vibrant. There is a vaguely heart-shaped object in the foreground in a puddle. You can see what you want to see in my paintings, make what you want to make of it. Remembrance Day November 11th 2006 - Poppies - First World War

It's Armistice Day today, marking the end of the First World War on this day in 1918. Poppies are the symbol of the day. After the devastation of the fighting, all that was left in most areas was mud-soaked land. Poppy seeds lay in the ground and happen to thrive best when the soil has been disturbed, as it was then. Consequently, virtually the only thing seen to be growing soon after and symbolising life, were the poppies, sprouting freshly through the earth. We mark the occasion of the Armistice being signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 with two minutes' silence. See others' versions of remembrance from the UK and from Paris.

This painting took quite a long time to paint, as i soak the canvas in water several times with drying sessions. Acrylic on box canvas. Currently one of my favourites. This is one of ten illustrations for Bert's Birthday, a children's book written and illustrated by Lynn Ede. As yet unpublished. Tale is about a mouse whose one wish is to see the view from the top room in the house. The farmer is a frightening figure for the mouse, whose best friend is Tom. Amidst danger of being caught, Tom arranges for the two of them to climb into the farmer's pocket as he climbs the stairs to the top floor. Finally, as this birthday treat from Tom to Bert, they get the view. More illustrations will be posted soon.
